All Inclusive Veteran Hockey Tournament

Main objective

Help us make a difference for children with cancer.

The Niels Larsen Trophy is not just about sport and fellowship - it's also a tournament with its heart in the right place. Our main goal is to raise money for the paediatric ward at Halmstad Hospital, and together we can create small glimmers of light in an otherwise tough everyday life.

The Niels Larsen Trophy is run by the non-profit organisation Halmstad Veteran Hockey.

Every team that takes part automatically contributes - €100 from the registration fee goes directly to this cause. The money is used for everything from toys and games to give children a break from their illness, to gift vouchers for food and experiences for families living with the strain of having a child with a long-term illness.

For many families, this means months or even years in hospital. When one or both parents can't work, finances quickly become an extra burden, on top of everything else they're already going through. Through the Niels Larsen Trophy, together we can help ease that burden - sometimes with something as simple as a gift card that makes life a little easier, or an activity that creates a nice memory in the midst of all the difficulties.

Being involved and supporting is not just about money, but about showing care and compassion. Together we can spread hope, joy and strength to the children and families who need it most.

History

The Niels Larsen Trophy has existed since 2011, the tournament was then called Easter Trophy and has for most people been associated with an end to the season.

Since Easter rarely coincides with the last weekend in April, we chose to change the name of the tournament to Niels Larsen Trophy in 2021.

The guiding principle of the tournament has always been to ”it should be fun” and that also applies to this year's edition of the Niels Larsen Trophy. This is where you come if you want to play hockey at veteran level, with all that that entails. You like meeting other people interested in hockey and making new contacts. You think it's just as important to have fun off the ice as on it, and you do your best to let go of prestige and sour faces both on and off the ice.

We have chosen the name Niels Larsen Trophy as a tribute to our constant enthusiast and Dane, Nisse Sport. You're guaranteed to see Nisse running around, slightly cock-eyed, in the corridors shouting almost incomprehensible instructions and swear words. Of course, Nisse will also participate in the tournament with his team Vikings.

Below you can read an interview with Nisse Sport.

The editors would like to start by thanking your wife for giving us permission to book you in for a short interview, can you tell us a bit about the Niels Larsen Trophy?

It is a tournament for ice hockey players, who, like myself, have a high level of ambition, questionable technical skills and where the genetic conditions were not good enough to make it all the way to the NHL.

I am a fan of sharpening skates but there is no difference in the skating despite trying all the profiles and bowl depths available. I also have a hard time hitting the puck even though I have a stick from Pierre Engvall. But I am the best Danish player in the tournament, I am sure of that.

Ice hockey should be fun, fun, fun and nice. Unfortunately, it rarely is for my fellow players when they end up on the same team as me. That's why it will be extra fun for you and your team to participate in this tournament.

You were born in the same year as former All Star back Brian Leetch, can you tell us a bit about your similarities and what standard participants in the tournament can expect to face?

Brian was a constant threat in the offensive zone, I am a constant threat in the defensive zone. Luckily, I'm too slow to make a defensive tackle but my goalie is terrified every time I get the puck in my own zone.

I'm more than happy to pass my opponents to such clear goal chances and if they still fail to score, I can well boast that I have made no less than 4 documented own goals this season. There are probably just as many undocumented ones, but I'm happy to replay them in the tournament for those who doubt.

Finally, why is icing not applied in the tournament?

I'm happy to tell you that. Since I don't find it important or necessary to aim when I shoot, rarely get over the centre line or for that matter have the physical ability to shoot a puck all over the ice, I have decided that we will never, ever apply icing as long as my name is the showcase for the tournament.

Offside I like, because I would never be faster than puck-carrying players. But icing? No, that would be as bad as Frölunda removing the Indian from the chest.
