The Bench Boys are the hockey team that takes ”fun on the ice” extremely seriously - and ”winning” rather lightly. We turn up to games straight from the office, construction site or sofa, with varying physiques but steady thirst. The warm-up is half skating and half looking for tape, helmets and confidence.
On the ice, we love nice passes almost more than goals. A goal is fun, sure - but a really unnecessary but delicious flip sandwich that leads to nothing? Pure poetry. The backcheck is optional, but the clap-clap game is mandatory. The pace is uneven, the changes are long, and someone barely knows how to ride the crossbar backwards!
After the final whistle, we're at our most cohesive. The match is analysed carefully over beers: ”That pass was brilliant”, ”The ice was bad” and ”I would have put it in if not...” are recurring tactical keys. Bench Boys don't play for trophies or glory - we play for the mates, the laughs and the cold beer that awaits afterwards. And sometimes we happen to win too.
